In this episode we learn that Hurley had my dream job in Los Angeles. He won the lottery.
But I am getting ahead of myself… After noticing a set of numbers on one of Sayid’s maps that originally belonged to the crazy french lady Rousseau, Hurley freaks out a bit. Sayid believes that these numbers are coordinates for something, but Hurley suspects something else.
The numbers 4,8,15,16,23,42 were his winning numbers back when he lived in LA. After winning the lotto, bad things begin to happen to his family and possessions. He felt that it was somehow related to winning the lottery. Nobody believes him when he tells them that he thinks he is jinxed because of the numbers.
He had received the numbers from a patient, Leonard, that he cared for in a psychiatric hospital. He returns there for answers and the guy who gave him the numbers freaks out and tells him that he has opened “the box” and must get far away from those those numbers “or it won’t stop.” Apparently he had worked in Australia with a buddy named Sam Toomi who heard those numbers when they were stationed at a listening station in the Pacific 16 YEARS AGO! Sam eventually uses the numbers to win a contest and of course “bad luck” follows eventually leading to his suicide.
So this my friends is how Hurley ended up in Australia. Looking for answers and then as far as he is concerned, causing the plane crash on the Island. His obsession with learning about the relationship to the numbers on Sayid’s map leads him back into the jungle to find the french woman. Everyone else on the Island thinks he is crazy but after meeting her he tells her about the numbers and she tells him that those numbers were heard on the radio transmission that lead her team to the Island. Like Hurley, she believes the numbers are cursed. They embrace. Oh Happy Day!
Cut to a close up of Locke and Boone’s metal container with the numbers 4,8,15,16,23,42 etched on the side… until next week…
In other news…
Locke builds a baby crib for Claire’s birthday. He is so serviceable.
Still a ways to go. But I am seeing the light.
